Omega 3 And Lung Health

Health benefits of omega 3 have been studied extensively for half a century.  There is new evidence that higher levels of omega 3 in our blood may be beneficial for lung health. Omega 3 and lung health is a relatively new and promising arena of study.

There is plenty of evidence that omega 3 has a positive impact on our overall health.   Most health experts and nutrition gurus recommend eating 2-3 servings of cold-water fatty fish like sardines, anchovies, wild salmon, herring or mackerel weekly.  These nutrition experts also agree that taking a high-quality omega 3 supplement is a good idea if you are not going to consume enough of the specific fish in your diet. However, all omega 3 fish oil is not created equal.  The general consensus among omega 3 experts is taking a Tg form or rTG form omega 3 fish oil supplement is the best way to get these omega 3 essential fatty acids.  This form of omega 3 has a triglyceride backbone the way fish naturally have it and absorbs much more rapidly than the less expensive ethyl ester form of omega 3. A new 2-part study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine provides strong evidence that elevated levels of omega 3 in the blood correlates with enhanced lung function.  The study insinuates that the omega 3 component DHA is mostly responsible for these lung health benefits.  Higher levels of omega 3 especially DHA linked to lung health benefits is a huge step in the right direction of preventative medicine. Is it the anti-inflammatory properties of omega 3 fish oils that are enhancing lung function or is it something else?  More studies are needed to verify this new lung related positive health benefits of omega 3.
